Week Two (16-20th October, 2017) Work etc

Monday 16th October 2017 – University Colorado – Denver

Community feeling at B&B and University of Colarado

As I began Week Two of my time away I feel albeit temporarily a fortunate member of the B&B I’m staying at the the Auraria Library community.  Both communities are friendly and share all sorts of social and professional insights and tips.

I met with Ellen another team member in the Researcher Support services Group. Ellen is the program lead for collection development which oversees the growth and maintenance of the Libray’s physical and digital materials. Ellen also looks after Open Educational Resources and instructs in the Savvy Researcher workshops, including Wikipedia Editing and Publishing Your Research sessions.

The weather has really warmed up about 6 to 24 deg Celsius. I enjoy walking home and around the campus at lunch time. Halloween decorations everywhere

Tuesday 17th October 2017

I met with Diane (Geospatial Services Specialist) and was really interested in both her background and role within the library and the University of Colorado Denver more broadly. Diane helps people understand how working with a spatial perspective can enhance their research. Diane is the person to contact to make a map, find and use GIS data for analysis, or get an introduction to the geospatial field. Diane also looks after:

3D printing and scanning service

What’s in the 3D printing and scanning Makelab

I had an enjoyable lunch out with Shea (Manager Research Supooer Services) where we discussed how things have changed here and at QUT.

In the evening Diane and I enjoyed a drink and some Poutines at Euclid Hall  http://www.euclidhall.com/

I investigated another service point in the library that Kiersten manages the digital media and design studio.

I sat in on a class that Tom (Collection Development and Research Librarian) ran for a Business Class – ” Today’s Globalised World” .  Very similar to what we instruct first year students at QUT.

Another popular service and physical space

A couple of colleagues and I enjoyed a quick bite to eat and then two of us went to a play. We had fun but funny strange in parts.

Thursday 19th October 2017

Diane Ryan and I checked out the hardware and software that the Makelab has on offer for 3D printing and scanning at Auraria library. Think when I go back to Denver after Pittsburgh I’ll make a couple of small things. Some sites to check out are cookiecastor.com and thingiverse.com

Some history at lunchtime. As the campus of Uni of Colorado resumed a residential precinct they thankfully retained some of the houses from around 1870s. The architectural styles vary a lot depending on the owners background, occupation and wealth. These original homes are now used for a variety of faculties as meeting spaces /offices. The area is known as the ninth street park.
